Exaggeration

Here is another post for my assessment: this time it's:

Exaggeration:

Exaggeration is used in games, mostly in RPGs, this art style is used for animé and manga typically, this art style is where the artist exaggerates many things within the game, mostly games with a Japanese influence, for example, in the game "final fantasy 7" the character "cloud" has a huge sword.

Exaggeration is also used for emotions, as the characters have bigger eyes when sad, and strong characters are muscular etc.
A lot of designers exaggerate things like weapons or vehicles the characters can use to make the player like them more as they look, feel and shoot more awesome. This gains more interest in their games, as would you rather drive a ford focus..... or a mustang with rocket launchers, nitros, machine guns, shields and hover car capability.

Abstract

Here is another post for my assessment: this time it's:

Abstraction:

Abstraction is an art form that doesn't want to be realistic, it wants to stand out, be different. The work produced in abstract may resemble some things but will have a lot of differences to it, or a lot of strange things in the game. An example of this art style in the new "Botanicula"game, as you can see in the picture, there are 5 main protagonists resembling a: leaf, feather, mushroom, poppy seed and a twig, yet the art style of the game is unusual, and the black creature on the right is unlike anything you've seen.
Another game that uses abstract is the game "geometry wars", this game uses basic shapes to fill the game, nothing is remotely human, or remotely anything apart from a collective of shapes.
Designers use abstract to stand out from the crowd, but, abstract is rarely used in full video games. abstract is mostly used in mini-games, arcade games and early games.

Cell-Shading

Here is another post for my graphics assessment, this time it's:

Cell-Shading:

Cell-Shading is a common in animation and cartons, but this is to do with video games........ So lets start again. Cell-Shading is a very uncommon thing to see in video games, it is not rare, as some designers prefare the style, but it is not the norm for games, one of the most famous games that use cell-shading are the "borderlands" games, these games are quite popular and come away from the norm by using the cell-shading technique.
Cell-Shading is also used commonly in games that are based off cartoons, one that comes to mind is the game Simpsons hit&run, this game, as you can guess, is based in the Simpsons universe and uses cell-shading as it's art from.
Designers and artists use cell-shading to make everything look cartoony, this can make a game look unusual, wacky, crazy and also gives the ability to make weird creatures, without having to make them look realistic, all though it is not the norm, cell-shaing is used to stand out from the crowd and appeal to different gamers.

Photorealism

Today I am posting for one of my assessments for college, I'm starting on "artistic styles used in computer games". alright, first up is:

Photorealism:

The term photorealism is used when the artist creates work based on a picture or video, and the resulting piece of artwork is highly realistic, photo-real-ism. In games photorealism is used with characters in games, the designers for the games want the characters to look as realistic as possible to allow the player to think of them more than just an NPC, as an actual thing, to allow the player to feel emotions towards that character, this is related to the uncanny valley:
This is the uncanny valley, for those who may not know, the uncanny valley is a graph presented to show the human likenesses (horizontal line) and the more human like something is (vertical line), as you can see the more human something gets from an industrial robot, the more we like it, but as soon as you get to a certain point, we start to not like it and hate it, but if the designer or maker, gets past that point, human likeness raises a lot.
So designers want to get to the end part of the chart so the players will like there characters, and develop feelings for them, whether they are sad when the character dies, they have hatred for a villain, etc.
